Tell Me “My Story”

Article submitted by Julie Merrin, Field Coordinator in SE Asia Rachel was sitting next to me recently…chattering away, as usual.  I’m not sure how, but somehow, the conversation turned  to her asking something about “her story”.  The story of how she came to be with me.  She has heard this story many times before, but [...]

Vidal and Mary Arevalo

Serving in Peru

Vidal and Mary started the Carpintery School “The Carpinters Sons” “Hijos del Carpentero” in 2004.  We have had 4 groups of boys go through the program.  And three boys have gone on to higher education.  The idea of the school is not only to teach life skills, carpintery, but also life changing skills, how to be a man of God in this country.  How should you act, walk, talk, work, life changing skills.

Ministry Focus/Current Projects: Carpentry school for boys.  Most of these boys have not completed school and so this is a chance for them to complete school and learn a trade.  Our boys range in age from 17-22.  Some of the boys we have had were on the streets for a number of years so they had  a hard time with rules and how to respond to authority but for the most part the boys learned some skills.  Our goal is that the boys leave here with the ability to build a house and put the things in it such as bed, table, chairs etc.  As well we are encouraging each one to finish high school and if they have finished then higher education.  Right now we have one in the middle of his second year of College and we have another one just starting college in August.

Also we are building a Christian School.  We are in the process of finishing the inside of this shell building and making it ready for children.  We are hoping that we will be able to start with part of the school year in April of 2010 if not August of 2010 with full primary starting then in March 2011.

We as well have a learning centre for women to learn sewing skills.  We have a couple of ladies that from this are starting a new business of making school uniforms.  This is a huge success and we are very happy for these ladies. We hold classes every other month teaching different skills, not just sewing but also we did a little painting project this past month.
