It’s been a passion of mine, ever since we hosted a dental team two years ago, to minister to the school with dental care and education. The opportunity presented itself once again this year, when Dr. Steve Hambly decided to bring another team to work with us. He brought with him another dentist, two assistants, and two hygienists. They spend their mornings caring for the kids in the school. Every class participated in a power point presentation about dental care and maintenance, every kid had his/her teeth cleaned, and was given a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss, and many, many teeth were filled or extracted as needed. In the afternoons, when school was not in session, we invited the local pastors and their families to come and receive the teaching and care. It was amazing to see the responses. One pastor’s family, in particular, had VERY bad teeth. Arlen sat with Pastor Armenio as his children were cared for. He said, “When I was growing up, my dad received a small bowl of corn for a day’s work. We went out into the jungle to find food just to sustain ourselves. We never thought of caring for our teeth. When I was old enough, I went into the
military, where we did have enough to eat, but still no thought was given to dental care. Now, here I am with my family, we have plenty to eat, we can afford treats, but we had no idea that the sodas and chips we snack on every day were doing all this damage to our teeth.” This family is taking the new information on dental care seriously. Pray that they will be able to continue in a culture that drinks way too much soda, eats way too many chips and candy, drinks very little pure water, and never go to a dentist unless something hurts.
